The outdoor collections of Kettal are a tribute to life in the open air. The company “Made in Spain” has interpreted its identity in offerings with a familiar, informal and hospitable character, epitomizing the typically Mediterranean concept of convivial living in furnishings. The approach to the outdoor world has been a factor from the outset for this company, when in 1964 Kettal began its adventure, producing camping gear in aluminium. In time it shifted its focus to complete outdoor decorating solutions, while conserving the know-how, technical prowess and functional quality required for open-air design, emphasizing softness and elegance. Today, thanks to the growing contribution of international creators, Kettal sets the stage for contemporary “outdoor living,” where beauty and pleasure go hand in hand.
“Creation, Innovation, Design” is, not surprisingly, Kettal’s guiding philosophy. Creating timeless furniture with a marked personality, the result of modern production techniques is the company’s mission. An objective pursued precisely through innovation, a concept that the company concretises in continuous research in scientific and technological terms, so in the materials selected, which are high-performance but also sustainable. The company’s entire production cycle is based on an eco-sustainable and environmentally aware approach, the result of further study into the impact of the materials recovery process and their durability. The raw materials that Kettal uses are in fact recyclable and recycled, while the essential ones are produced locally, within a 100 km radius. The focus on the region and local manufacturing is a further key to Kettal’s design.

“Our products are 100 per cent locally produced, while 85 per cent are handmade,” says the company. The manual processes from which Kettal’s collections derive make it possible to use techniques otherwise unfeasible in a standard production process, to control quality, and to respond to every customisation request, for total product customisation.

One perfect representation of this vision is the Eolias collection. Antonio Citterio has designed a versatile proposal, so refined that it can also be utilized indoors. Inspired by the name and concept of the archipelago of islands off the coast of Sicily, in the Tyrrhenian Sea, Eolias stands out for a series of coordinated but also distinct design elements. The program includes chairs with or without armrests, a club chair with a high back, and even a model on wheels, produced in rattan and aluminium, alongside two folding tables in teak. The rattan adds a touch of warmth to this collection with a modern, versatile character.

The Grand Bitta collection by Rodolfo Dordoni also concentrates on the aspects of materiality. Two new models – the dining chair and the daybed – expand the collection, in tune with the style of the family made of ample volumes and a balanced combination of materials – between the structure in aluminium with the polyester cording, the teak wood and the stone of the table tops.

“My aim was to create a weave that was dense but also capable of breathing – resembling the weave of ropes used to tie boats to mooring bitts (hence the name of the collection) – giving the pieces a sensation of lightness, but at the same time making them seem like welcoming nests in natural colors, in which it is possible to relax,” the designer said.

The lively, warm touch of Patricia Urquiola sets the tone of the Plumon seating, with a new dining chair (with corded armrests) and a new club chair. For this family of furnishings, Patricia Urquiola has focused on the idea of “dressing and undressing” furniture, so the upholstery is bonded to the structure like a bespoke garment, made rhythmical by ribbed stitching that is both aesthetic and functional in purpose, boosting the product’s intrinsic comfort.
The relaxing and enveloping atmospheres created by the Kettal collections are sublimated in the project Pavilion H, a work of architecture in which indoor and outdoor settings have total continuity, and the dialogue between interiors and the landscape is one of complete synergy. Open, fluid spaces play with luminosity – natural and artificial – as well as transparency and lightness, while offering a series of accessories and structural elements that greatly expand the décor possibilities – sliding panels in fabric, wood and aluminium, or fixed panels with shelves, adjustable shutters in aluminium and wood, lateral panels in stone and glass, among other items.

Furthermore, with the inclusion of the Kode system Pavilion H becomes an intelligent house, controlled at a distance of miles or from the sofa, using a cell phone: the special app permits adjustment of the roof opening, control of lighting and ventilation, and even the opening and closing of curtains. Pavilion H becomes smart and connected, permitting outdoor living with a digital system.
