On 28 October the ADI Design Museum in Milan hosted the official prize ceremony for the FSC Furniture Awards, the competition created by Forest Stewardship Council® to support companies and dealers who choose FSC certification for their wooden products.

The label identifies the sustainable origin of wood, ensuring sourcing from correctly managed forests, in keeping with rigorous standards in relation to the environment, the society and economics, established and evaluated by the Forest Stewardship Council International. Italy is in second place in the international rankings and in first place for Europe for FSC Chain of Custody certifications.

How did the initiative begin? Thanks to its versatility, strength and readiness for different types of workmanship, as well as its intrinsic beauty, wood is one of the materials most often utilized in the world of furnishings. This is why in various countries and regions, including the European Union and the United Kingdom, standards are being developed and applied to ensure sustainable sourcing of the material. As reported by lnterpol, illegal cutting of forests represents 50-90% of all forestry activity in the main tropical supply areas (Amazon basin, central Africa, Southeast Asia): this is equal to about 15-30% of all the timber on the global market.
