Gaetano Pesce, agent provocateur

Farewell to Gaetano Pesce, a visionary master who has left us at the age of 84. A true symbol of Italian art and design, his innovative spirit will continue to inspire us during the upcoming Milan Design Week

Gaetano Pesce

Born in La Spezia in 1939, Pesce spent his life crossing geographic boundaries, living in Helsinki and Paris before finally settling in New York in 1980. His tireless curiosity and artistic vigor led him to transform the realms of art, design, and architecture over more than six decades. Despite health difficulties in recent years – as reported by his family on his official Instagram account – Pesce maintained a positive and playful spirit, leaving an indelible mark on his loved ones and all who admired him. Pesce’s creative spark continues to live on through his work, which is present in the permanent collections of the world’s most prestigious museums. But Pesce was more than just an artist, he was a pioneer in evolving thought. He courageously rejected Modernism (which he saw as suffocating individual creativity), choosing to shape the present with only the desire to be contemporary.

Montanara, Meritalia by Gaetano Pesce

We will remember him in Milan during the upcoming Design Week, at the “Nice To See You” exhibition scheduled at the venerable Ambrosiana Library and the “L’Uomo Stanco” installation, created in collaboration with the municipality of Milan, in Piazza San Pio XI. “Nice To See You” is a free public exhibition hosted at the venerable Ambrosiana Library. It brings together about thirty of Pesce’s most recent works, all completed between 2023 and 2024. Chosen not only for their functional role as design pieces but also as carriers of messages, these dual-purpose objects lead us to ponder their meaning.

Pesce, an indefatigable warrior, leaves us, but his influence, like his art, is continually evolving, forever inscribed in the annals of Italian design.
