Out in the open, in lightness

Linear structures that allow the eye to wander, weaves and macro textures characterise the new generation of outdoor furniture

The thread, woven in various dimensions and materials, is the leitmotif of the latest outdoor collections. Armchairs, tables, sofas and rugs with structures made of ropes, yarns, metal elements or aluminium rods resembling bamboo create corners dedicated to relaxation and conversation, both in the home and in the outdoor areas of hospitality structures. The materials, the result of research and study, are resistant to UV rays and temperature changes, so that the colours and quality of the furniture are maintained over time.

A “macro-texture” characterises Chopstix, the JANUS et Cie collection born from Paola Navone’s creative flair for mixing colours, textures and materials. The hand-woven olefin armchair and armless chair are available in three colours: aubergine, peacock and pepper. The collection offers a choice of oval or asymmetrical modular dining table.

The Sendai family of chairs, designed by Inoda+Sveje for Minotti and coordinated by Rodolfo Dordoni, was created as a line of upholstered furniture for interiors. The concept behind the Sendai “Cord” Outdoor collection is based on the original volume of the seat, which is emptied and then stylised thanks to the skilful use of cords available in ecru, burgundy or dark brown. The 360° swivel base with return has a carefully tested mechanism for outdoor use in a natural teak finish.

BertO’s Sounds outdoor collection, created in collaboration with the Castello Lagravinese studio, includes outdoor sofas and armchairs, garden tables combined with embossed steel chairs, coffee tables and ottomans. A thin structure of vertical metal wires runs through the entire collection. The collection includes the Caroline armchair, the John B round sofa and the Carl coffee table, available in four different sizes, with a shaped lava stone top.

Tectona’s Bamboo collection is inspired by the characteristic design of bamboo canes, a recurring motif in Art Nouveau furniture, but is made of aluminium, a durable material with high resistance to climate change. The collection consists of armchairs, tables, chairs and sofas, where the armchair is characterised by the ample width of the seat, the ideal inclination of the backrest and the curved shape of the armrests. The black frame is powder-coated – a technique that increases the impact resistance of the layer of paint – and is supplied with cushions.

The strings of a harp are the source of inspiration for the Arp collection, designed for Diabla by Borja García and Laura Ros from Made Studio. The geometric succession of vertical lines becomes the characteristic motif that distinguishes the sofas, armchairs and coffee tables, with a line that recalls traditional 19th-century cast-iron outdoor furniture. The two-seater sofa has a tubular structure in textured aluminium, a light and resistant material also used for the coffee tables.

Paolo Castelli’s Babou family includes the Babou Lounge armchair, the Babou Pouf and Babou Modular, a modular system that responds to different aesthetic and spatial requirements. The collection’s defining element is a graphic mark inspired by the art of Salvador Dalí. A softly drawn line that supports the back on one side and embraces the seat on the other, in a play of contrasts between minimalism and figurative exuberance.

This open-air lounge, designed by Raffaello Galiotto for Nardi, consists of the Doga Relax lounge chair and the Doga Table coffee table. The slats (“doga”, in Italian), a characteristic theme, are available in different colours. Made of durable and fully recyclable fibreglass, the collection also includes the Doga Chair (with arms), the Doga Bistrot Seat (without arms) and the Doga Stool. Cushions are available for all seats.

The Tetide (pictured) and Pangea outdoor rug collections are the result of a collaboration between Studiopepe and Ethimo, inspired by the tribal signs and weaves often used in primitive cultures. The new creations are characterised by geometric patterns, enhanced by the use of warm, intense colours and weaves that enhance the three-dimensional effects of the yarn. Pure elements such as zigzags, stripes and diamonds tell stories and come into contact with nature, reconnecting with an ancient, almost mythological world.

Midj’s artisan vocation in industrial metalworking, combined with Paola Navone’s creativity, has created Bolle. A collection with a Mediterranean flavour, designed for outdoor use, including sofas, armchairs, tables, chairs and lamps in coloured and macro-perforated metal. The seats are enveloping shells that can be personalised with cushions. The lamps create special atmospheres thanks to the play of light and shadow. Paola Navone’s signature is also unmistakable in the choice of colours, which reflect her passion for the sea.

The Val Camonica collection (pictured is the Sonico model) from Atelier Tapis Rouge is inspired by millennia-old engravings found in the mountains of northern Italy. Graphics, signs and symbols are reproduced with a material effect thanks to the different heights of the fibrous material used. The collection is made exclusively from 100% recycled PET fibre, which is extremely weather resistant, easy to wash and durable.

Designed by Rodolfo Dordoni for Roda, Astra is a family of outdoor recliners comprising two lounge chairs with high or low backs and a three-seater sofa. The frame is made of thick aluminium tubing, which is doubled and covered with rope to form the armrests. Astra is available in the colours of the Roda range: smoke and milk for the aluminium frame, combined with 7 mm ropes in all the catalogue variations, both traditional and recycled.

Jali by Paola Lenti is an outdoor and indoor rug handmade with Twiggy or Twitape yarns, materials developed through the company’s constant research. Twiggy is an outdoor yarn with yarns of the same or different colours, Twitape is an outdoor material combining yarns of different colours. In both cases, the yarns and materials are placed inside a thin, flat, transparent sheath. The resulting woven mat is finished with a zigzag stitch and a fringe around the perimeter.

Following the success of the indoor version, Neutra has launched the new collection La Grande Muraglia Outdoor, designed by the great maestro Mario Bellini. The unique design, developed under the creative direction of the studio Migliore+Servetto, includes a three-seater sofa, a two-seater sofa, an armchair and a chaise lounge. The structure is in Silver travertine, the uprights and frame are reminiscent of columns and architrave of an imaginary monumental building, in contrast with the soft and welcoming elements of the seat
