Playing with light

They bring not only light but also poetry to spaces. Decorative lamps are capable of shaping light and generating countless compositions

Some designers are inspired by flowers, others by stars, while others still have reinterpreted the style of iconic industrial fixtures and the view of a blue sky in pop creations. The designs of these lamps underscore attention to detail, but also an ability to blend crafts, design and technology.

Favaretto&Partners has created the Cordea indoor suspension lamps (on cover) for Masiero: the modern interpretation of the iconic fixtures used in industrial settings. The metal body shaped like a bell is topped by a lamellar diffuser and wrapped in a wide piece of cowhide. The body comes in three finishes, for free combinations with the three colors offered for the cowhide.

The Trim collection draws on the archive of the large installations produced by Barovier&Toso in the 1960s and 1970s, through the multiplication and repetition of modular elements like reeds or polyhedral, with smooth surfaces or traditional Murano texture effects. The hexagonal element is made with the age-old technique known as ‘ghiaccio,’ while the position of the modules can be personalized at the moment of installation: a symmetrical, regular order, or a more eccentric form.

Antonym is the lamp by Silvia Stella Osella for Bottega Intreccio (creative direction by the studio AngelettiRuzza Design). The lamp reflects the encounter between two different expressions of Italian crafts: weaving and embroidery. The central wicker body has the form of a geoid, a sphere squashed along the middle; it is combined with embroidery with a botanical motif made by had with strips of black raffia.

Marcel Wanders returns to the theme of the suspended dome lamp with Skynest by Flos. Skynest has the typical form of a suspension lamp, with a central core and a shade. The light, however, is not emitted by a bulb, nor by an LED circuit, but by the parts that form the structure of the shade itself. Skynest is composed of 24 luminous LED sticks covered in two-tone fabric, to create a very light presence inspired by crafts but based on technology.

Constellation is a series of six lamps that suggest starlight, designed by David Rockwell for Lasvit. Each fixture in the collection takes its name from a constellation (in the photo, the Tri Star applique), and all the items are composed of a kit that includes glass domes surrounded by a slender metal ring.

Ingo Maurer presents pic-a-stic, the new suspension lamp to arrange as desired, based on the game of pick-up-sticks. The wooden sticks (over 50 in the assembly kit) can be freely placed, crosswise or parallel, around the central luminous body, supported by an elastic ring in black rubber. There are two color schemes: one is more rigorous, with sticks in white and black, with the exception of two red ones; the other is more lively, featuring red and blue sticks.

The Mokuren chandelier is the result of collaboration between Lladró and the Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa. The purity of the metal lines merges with the delicacy of handmade porcelain flowers. Fukasawa has drawn inspiration from the extraordinary beauty of white magnolia blossoms, a symbol of eternal bonds in Japan. The warm glow of the LED lighting, filtered through the translucent porcelain of the petals, creates an engaging brightness of variable intensity, while the structure in black coated aluminium represents the branches of the magnolia tree.

Segmento, an LED lamp by Indefinito Design Studio for Olev, is composed of two cylindrical bases joined by a slender strip of spring steel that contains the light source. The steel is flexible and permits the creation of countless compositions: each ‘Segmento,’ in fact, can be overlaid or crossed by others, or installed at corners of the walls.

Marcantonio for Seletti Window Lamp has created a new product that plays with indoor-outdoor perception. The luminous object with the form of an archetypal window – available in four variations – eliminates boundaries of spaces, creating an illusory opening towards a blue sky punctuated by white clouds, suggesting one of the typical patterns of the brand. From the white frame, an LED of the latest generation transforms rooms with a dreamy atmosphere.
