Outdoor spaces have a growing role in contemporary lifestyles. The fact that we spend more time in the open air has led to greater creativity in outdoor spaces, whose style and comfort replicate the same attention to detail found in interiors. One of the leaders of this trend in the global panorama of ceramics is Atlas Concorde. The company based in Fiorano Modenese offers collections designed to create stylistic continuity between indoor and outdoor settings. Porcelain stoneware is a perfect material for outdoor applications, since it stands up to weathering, is non-porous, non-absorbent stainproof, scratchproof and skidproof.

For these reasons, the international studio CNS Works Design of Jakarta (Indonesia) has chosen the stone-effect porcelain stoneware of Atlas Concorde for the pavings of the large areas of Atlas Beach Fest, the biggest beach club in Bali. With 26,000 square meters of area along the waterfront of Berawa, Atlas Beach Fest is an entertainment center where Atlas Concorde has brought the excellence of Made in Italy.

The Norde collection, with its stone effect, is the unrivaled protagonists of the project. Based on the luminosity and infinite chromatic variations of quartzite, a metamorphic stone composed of a mixture of quartz and minerals, along with beola, the ancient stone typical of the Alps, Norde generates surfaces with a forceful, textured look, while accurately reproducing the natural rugged allure of the original stone.

The four hues of Norde have permitted the designers to shape the color setting of the space, by selecting the variant most suitable for the natural context: from the color of magnesium, an ivory with warm tones, to the intense gold with a gray-sand dominant, passing through platinum, a luminous pale gray with silvery reflections, all the way to lead, a dark gray hue with primordial shades of quartzite and beola.

Another recent example of outdoor paving is the theatrical project completed in London by the firm Arup Associates: the Sky Pool at Embassy Gardens, an elevated swimming pool whose length of 25 meters connects the rooftops of two luxurious skyscrapers in the heart of the City. Atlas Concorde, a case of Italian excellence in the field of ceramic surfaces and facings, has contributed to give form to this extraordinary project.

The collections inspired by stone surround the pool and define the boundaries of the terrace, with a contemporary accent. The porcelain stoneware has proven to be the ideal choice, bringing together aspects of design, technical reliability and performance. Complex and highly detailed, this implementation has to cope with the movements of the buildings due to wind and minor tremors in the terrain.

It was necessary to find technological solutions to allow a pool with a depth of 3 meters, containing 375 tons of water, to remain suspended over the void. The engineers and architects opted for a framework in acrylic with a thickness of 20 cm, and a base with a height of slightly over 30. The choice of claddings for this important project went to the stone-effect porcelain stoneware surfaces by Atlas Concorde, selected in a color range of pale and desaturated nuances, well suited to the minimal language of the pool’s design.

Another instance of the deployment of a ceramics collection to adapt to various habitat contexts is the Marvel Travertine series, one of the newest offerings of Atlas Concorde, based on one of the finest stones in Italian history: Travertine.

There are two graphic solutions for outdoor spaces: Vein Cut – reproducing the typical striated image of travertine, and available in thicknesses of 9 mm or 20 mm, where the latter can be installed on areas with vehicle traffic, or on grass and gravel – and Cross Cut – with extended shadings, available only in the 9 mm grip thickness, ideal for patios, terraces and pavements without vehicle passage.

For the most demanding clients, Atlas Concorde offers the Marvel X porcelain stoneware collection, bringing the effect of marble outdoors thanks to its hammered finish. Marvel X, in the Hammered Outdoor 20 mm version, is ideal for open-air installations. The look is that of marble freshly removed from the quarry. The tactile effect is that of hammered and brushed hewn stone, to ensure skid prevention while offering colors that never change over time.

The outdoor finish of Marvel X is available in two versions based on marble varieties often used in architecture: Calacatta Apuano, also known as Calacatta Michelangelo, stands out for slender golden veins; while Fior di Bosco, for those in search of something more forceful, has a more pronounced gray hue with golden veins.
