Hotel Borgo Santandrea: local crafts and Gio Ponti

The structure perched on the Amalfi Coast is a tribute to Made in Italy, a magical place in which to feel “right at home.” Not only the sea, but also signature design

On the Amalfi Coast, Borgo Santandrea comes back to life: after four years of restoration and a soft opening last summer, the hotel is now a new destination that welcomes guests into an eclectic blend of local crafts and Mid-Century design. The Orlacchio and De Siano families, owners of the structure, have turned to the architect Rino Gambardella to create a “home” with echoes of the 1960s, where luxury Made in Italy takes on contemporary tones.

With a private beach and surrounded by a series of terraced gardens (olive, lemon, pomegranate trees, myrtle and winter jasmine) made in collaboration with the landscape architects Philip Adiutori and Gaetano Amato, the hotel has 29 rooms and 16 suites facing the sea of Conca dei Marini.

Inside the main colors are white and blue, starting with the handpainted tiles – 31 different types, produced by Cotto Vietri with references to the decorations of Pompeii and Herculaneum – in dialogue with fabrics by Dedar, Once Milano and Rubelli.

The context features furniture designed by Gio Ponti and reissued by Molteni&C, like the D.151.4, D.153.1 and D.156.3 chairs and the D.555.2 tables: objects that have gone down in history, alongside the Attico collection designed for Molteni&C by Nicola Gallizia. In the spaces of the hotel, the lamps are in blown glass with a linear design (produced by Venicem). Ceramic creations by Marco Fusco and Lucio Liguori reinforce the bond with the local territory.

“We are excited to be opening the doors of Borgo Santandrea,” says the co-owner and general manager Maurizio Orlacchio. “It has been quite a challenge to restore the property over the last four years, and we are proud to have brought together so many talented artisans and iconic Italian brands to create a unique hotel, an authentic example of Made in Italy.” The next goal will be to create four new suites by the end of the year, and four more in 2023.
