Mass Beverly: new dynamics for the residential

A conversation with Mary Ta and Lars Hypko, founders of Mass Beverly in Los Angeles, about the home as a cross-functional space

As homes became a cross-functional space for work, exercise, day care and entertaining spaces, Mary Ta and Lars Hypko, founders of Mass Beverly showroom in Los Angeles (Mary Ta is also the owner of Minotti Los Angeles), saw a sustained interest for the flexibility and adaptability in modular furniture with multiple configurations. “As clients travel less, their primary residence must meet more needs, like having a dining room similar an experience at a restaurant”.

How is your local market evolving?
Overall, we see the reframing of the relationship with the home. As homes became a cross-functional space for work, exercise, day care, and entertaining spaces, we saw a sustained interest for the flexibility and adaptability seen in modular furniture with multiple configurations. Additionally, with the trend of indoor & outdoor living as an extension to the home – a functional outdoor space is even more essential in Los Angeles.

What are the trends in furniture?
Our clients are looking for the best, the most beautiful. There is an appetite for high-quality design that is created to the highest caliber. The constant need for innovation pushes the boundaries of design as the consumer is now more informed. Sustainability is also a trend that we find increasing as the purchase of quality goods that can be enjoyed for a longer period of time. The selections we see now are more organic – toward natural fabrics, warm tones. Limited availability materials and textures are highly sought after.

What relationship do you have with brands and partners?
We have wonderful relationships with our partner brands. Minotti Los Angeles is the exclusive Minotti dealer on the West Coast and we closely collaborate with Minotti Italy to share evolving client needs, product needs and trends. In the project area, do you have any ongoing big projects?
Currently, we have multiple single-family residences over 30,000 sq ft and multi-unit complexes ongoing. Our design team works closely to apply our wide breadth of offerings that are not only functional, but also beautiful to our projects. For example, as clients travel less, their primary residence must meet more needs. Such as, an efficient and comprehensive kitchen that serves daily to a larger number of people. A dining room that now is used daily, and similar to an experience at a restaurant. A closet that can secure valuables as well as store a larger volume of personal belongings as clients travel less. An outdoor space that must encompass a larger amount of entertainment from eating, to children areas, to fun.
