Knoll and Oma together in Cologne

The Dutch architecture studio designed the brand's imm cologne stand. The space presents Knoll's new products and celebrates the centenary of the Bauhaus

Knoll takes part in the 2020 edition after its debut last year, presenting some of its latest creations along with modern classics and iconic products by two great masters of design: Mies van der Rohe and Eero Saarinen.
The booth has been designed by OMA, the firm co-founded by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, who has collaborated with Knoll for a number of years. The concept of the booth, created to celebrate the centenary of the Bauhaus, is subdivided into four settings, each focusing on one project by Mies van der Rohe: the house in Krefeld (1927), Weissenhof estate in Stuttgart (1927), Barcelona Pavilion (1929), and the Tugendhat house (1930).

Inside the display itinerary, one perceives the mingling between what existed in the past and its evolutions: some of the modern classics created by Mies van der Rohe now feature new finishes and coverings, as in the case of the iconic daybed from the Barcelona® Collection in refined Green leather, the MR Chaise longue proposed in an elegant covering accompanied by the classic MR Chairs, all the way to the famous Barcelona® Chair in the Relax version.

Passing from one setting to the next, the experience continues with the iconic impact of the Pedestal Collection and the comfort of the Womb Chair by Eero Saarinen, alongside the Platner Collection, establishing a perfect dialogue with more recent creations like the Gould Sofa by Piero Lissoni, in a new modular version with chaise longue, enhanced by fine sartorial touches.

Among the new developments, to complete the “Bauhaus Edition” collection shown at the last edition, composed of the classic MR Chairs and the iconic Barcelona® Chair by Mies van der Rohe, Knoll presents the Bauhaus Limited Edition of the legendary Wassily™ Chair designed by Marcel Breuer, a series of just 500 pieces, certified and numbered, to commemorate the centenary of the Bauhaus movement and the close ties with Knoll and the foundations of its inimitable design approach.

Inside the Pesch showroom in Cologne, a long-term reference point for design lovers, starting on 13 January 2020 the exhibition “The Original Design” presents a concept entirely focused on the works of Eero Saarinen, one of the greatest 20th-century designers. Part of his success was down to his amazing ability to fuse different elements into one whole: sculpture, design and architecture, the present and the future, Europe and America, organicism and abstraction.
