An oasis of peace

Marco Lavit creates Hut for Ethimo: a nest of wellbeing in the courtyards of the BHV Marais department store, home of the exhibition ‘Design Italia’

For design week, Paris is full of initiatives, talks and installations. One of the latter is Hut, a nest of ecological wood created by the architect and designer Marco Lavit for Ethimo.

The designer himself defines the project: “Hut is an unusual human-scale nest, a place of wellbeing in the open air. The rhythmical pattern of the wood offers perceptions of the surrounding context. A place to rest and to meditate, composed of two main elements that can coexist or live independently: a comfortable platform on which to lie in the sun, and a shady space for pleasant outdoor moments.”

The work can be seen in the courtyards of the BHV Marais bazaar from 28 August to 29 September. Hut is made of long wooden posts that reproduce the form of a teepee. Each nest is in Accoya®, a material often used for outdoor furnishings, and measures 320 cm in height by 300 in diameter. Inside, visitors find a large circular seat with cushions, an invitation to relax. The structure is made of wood and metal.

The outdoor spaces are enhanced, connecting the nests of Lavit and Ethimo with the spaces of the department store, by an installation created by Nicola Spinetto Architectes for Nodoo. Inside BHV Marais, the public can discover Design Italia, an exhibition on the Italian art of living, curated by Rossana Orlandi.

Marco Lavit has been a mover on the design scene since he was 26 years old: in 2014 he founded his design studio, Atelier Lavit, working not just in France, but also in England, China, Japan and Australia. His projects include some real tree houses.
