Luna, Stellar, Moon Island, Moon Rocks. Juan Montoya has drawn inspiration from the sky above for his latest collection of carpets for Stepevi, which was unveiled last week at Maison & Objet 2018. The result is an unmitigated success: four interpretations of the lunar landscape in textile form make up the Moonlight collection, with all carpets made from high-quality wool and viscose.
“The fascination of the starry sky in the countryside was my inspiration for this carpet collection,” explains Montoya. “The moon was the driving force with its asymmetrical form and scintillating expression. It always intrigued me and continually put my imagination in a cosmic state.” The carpets feature the starry sky and the moon in a conceptual design made up of round, abstract shapes layered on fabric. The colours have a contemporary feel to them, creating a range of combinations and contrasts between light and dark shades of grey and blue, bright red and ecru.
The collection provides further confirmation of the Turkish company’s ability to create ultra-modern products while employing techniques that respect the long, artisanal traditions of carpet manufacturing. Contemporary, sophisticated and extremely sensual, the carpets draw the gaze to patterns, asymmetrical motifs and juxtaposed layers.
