Los Angeles, the home of Dwell on Design

Over the next couple of days, Los Angeles is not just a place of endless beaches and exclusive meetings with Hollywood VIPS. It’s also going to be showcasing the best in international design courtesy of Dwell on Design LA. The event kicks off tomorrow, Friday 24 June, and is set to turn the Californian city into a hive of activity with two days of pure creative abandon. Things are set to begin with a bang at 18:00 local time as the celebrated Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto introduces the event. An array of other industry figures – including Gary Sinise, Mettewth Hufft, Christopher Hawthorne and Tutu Hasegawa – will take part in several round tables during the event, while Jamie Durie will be attending as Dwell Outdoor creator. A total of 43 debates will be held on themes such as Healthy Architecture, Business of Design, Smart Home and Nice Modernist, with 96 speakers set to share their personal experiences and opinions.
One of the big new developments at this 11th edition of Dwell will be Dwell Outdoor, an exhibition of innovative exterior design ideas housed in prefabricated structures spanning around 3000sq m. In terms of participating brands, RAD Furniture and LivingHomes will launch new products and projects, as will a whole host of international design names set to take part in the event: Fenix NTM, Modify Furniture, Ronbow, Signature Kitchen Suite, Koncept and Marvin are just some of the brands to be found in the Los Angeles Convention Centre.
IMM Cologne will have a special role at Dwell: the exclusive German show will provide a sneak peek at 11 of the brands and designers set to appear at its next edition. Dick Spierenburg, the show’s creative director, will also be taking to the floor to speak about the products, materials and emerging talents set to steal the spotlight at IMM. There’ll be space for emerging talents to showcase their creations in Los Angeles too, thanks to the Prime Edition Pavilion.
California’s population have already started welcoming the first visitors taking part in the exclusive Home Tour initiative, which gives them the chance to enter and gain a first-hand experience of real-life domestic spaces in the city. Dwell on Design LA also features family-friendly activities such as the Folk Art Playhouses, which have been architecturally designed to meet the needs of all the family. Indeed, Dwell is far from being an industry-only affair – it is a celebration of design ready to welcome huge numbers of visitors, all of whom will no doubt be wowed by the City of Angels – and design.
