The 2026 edition, held on the evening of April 27th in Berlin at the Friedrichstadt-Palast, brought together an ever-growing and diverse design community spanning various origins and fields of practice. Taking place shortly after the conclusion of Milan Design Week, the iF Design Award gathered 2,000 guests from the international design scene in a single hall for the long-awaited, moderated ceremony, which began punctually at 7:00 PM and concluded at 9:30 PM.
Its significance lies less in scale than in scope. From product and architecture to communication, digital systems and services, the range of awarded disciplines reflects a field that has moved well beyond its traditional boundaries. Design here operates less as a discrete practice and more as a cultural and strategic framework, linking industry, technology and evolving patterns of use.
The awarded projects point to a set of shared directions. Sustainability is no longer framed purely in terms of materials, but as a wider rethinking of lifecycles and production models. At the same time, the convergence of physical and digital continues to shape user experience and service design, while a parallel strand reasserts the value of analogue interaction, pushing back against homogenisation.
Within this context, the Lifetime Achievement Award presented to Patricia Urquiola feels particularly fitting. Her work continues to balance formal research, material experimentation and a nuanced understanding of use, maintaining a dialogue with industry that remains central to contemporary practice.
Beyond the ceremony, the accompanying Trend Conference extended the conversation, offering a more structured reading of ongoing shifts. The iF Design Trend Report 2026 maps a series of tensions – between automation and control, comfort and capability, nature and the artificial – pointing to a discipline increasingly tasked with shaping scenarios rather than simply delivering solutions.
