For its maiden Middle East edition, NOMAD has chosen an emblematic setting: Terminal 1 at Zayed International Airport, a 1970s modernist landmark by Paul Andreu. From 19 to 22 November 2025, the curatorial platform led by Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte will open a new chapter in Abu Dhabi, reaffirming its mission to interweave cultural context, collectible design and site-specific narratives.
Returned to the city after its retirement from operations in 2023, the terminal provides a compelling stage for a contemporary reinterpretation of its circular lounges, arched walkways and iconic mosaic roof. Rather than overwrite the building, the fair reactivates its architecture, turning the space into an immersive setting where international galleries present design, contemporary art and jewellery projects.
NOMAD’s arrival in Abu Dhabi takes place within a rapidly expanding cultural ecosystem, fuelled by institutions such as Louvre Abu Dhabi and the future Guggenheim. Coinciding with Abu Dhabi Art – which will evolve into Frieze Abu Dhabi from 2026 – NOMAD positions itself as the region’s sole fair devoted to collectible design, distinguishing itself as a platform that fosters dialogue between local craft traditions and global savoir-faire.
The gallery selection reflects this multi-polar outlook: from Nilufar and Gallery FUMI to Parisian names like Galerie BSL and Galerie Gastou, alongside regional players including The AP Room, Le LAB, Don Tanani and Bardo Collections. Special presentations broaden the conversation through collaborations between designers, artisans and institutions, highlights include Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council, Formafantasma for Maison Perrier-Jouët, and Bottega Veneta’s “Destinations”, as well as the expansive “DEPARTURES” programme realised with Etihad Airways.
Off-site projects, such as “Shifting Terrains” at Jumeirah Saadiyat Island, map the emergent creative geographies of the Emirates. True to NOMAD’s itinerant model, the Abu Dhabi edition does more than showcase objects: it constructs an experience in which architecture, context and curatorial intent define new ways for audiences, collectors and galleries to meet.
The event also invites visitors to rediscover Terminal 1 itself, whose geometric precision and sculptural volumes embody a pioneering moment in Gulf architecture. By reinstating the building as a civic, cultural interior rather than a transit space, NOMAD highlights how historic modernism can be reimagined for contemporary audiences, restoring a sense of openness, encounter and shared exploration.
