Designed by the acclaimed studio OPEN Architecture, the Sun Tower emerges as a striking new cultural landmark in Yantai, China. Rather than an overtly iconic form, the architects conceived a structure deeply rooted in its coastal context, celebrating the sun and sea while drawing inspiration from ancient sun-worship and historical watchtowers. This cone-like edifice functions as a contemporary fusion of lighthouse, cultural center, and sundial, paying homage to nature and the passage of time.

The 50-meter-tall building, constructed from two slanted concrete shells in close consultation with Arup, is meticulously oriented by the sun’s path. Its northern edge aligns with the noon sunlight of the equinoxes, while the entrance tunnel points to the Winter Solstice sunset. The central semi-outdoor theatre is precisely aimed at the Summer Solstice sunrise over Zhifu Island. Beyond visual alignments, the concave inner shell amplifies the ocean’s sounds, creating an immersive sensory experience. The surrounding plaza features elliptical rings, reminiscent of planetary orbits, with a water channel marking the building’s shadows at specific times, and fountains celebrating the 24 solar terms of the traditional Chinese calendar.

The Sun Tower integrates diverse cultural functions, including exhibition spaces, a library, a café, and a unique ‘Phenomena Space’ at its summit, offering panoramic sea views and collecting rainwater through an oculus. Throughout the design, passive strategies like tunnel cooling, thermal mass, and cross-ventilation minimize energy consumption. OPEN Architecture’s vision for the Sun Tower is to reconnect people with ancient wisdom and the spiritual power of nature, fostering community engagement and raising environmental awareness, thereby contributing to the fight against the climate crisis by shifting both lifestyle and belief systems.
