Carl Hansen & Søn, a name associated with Danish design, has reinforced its presence in Copenhagen‘s Frederiksstaden district by assuming the premises at Bredgade 33. This address, overlooking Sankt Annæ Plads and previously occupied by the auction house Bruun Rasmussen, will now showcase Danish design and craftsmanship. For over a decade, Carl Hansen & Søn has presented design and craftsmanship in Bredgade. Over time, the store expanded to include three properties on both sides of the street. Now, the collection of furniture, lamps, rugs, and accessories is united in a newly opened flagship store.

Customers can now explore over 600 square meters of design and craftsmanship spread over two floors, in an environment that fully celebrates the brand’s identity.«Bredgade is a neighborhood full of galleries, antique shops and design stores, which is why it is a key location for Carl Hansen & Søn», comments Inger Marie Jensen Hansen, Chief Commercial Officer Retail at Carl Hansen & Søn. «With the move to this new location, we are settling into a building that embodies a unique history of art and design, the result of 75 years of art auctions. We couldn’t imagine a better combination for Carl Hansen & Søn and we are excited to be able to present our entire collection of extraordinary craftsmanship».

The building at Bredgade 33 was constructed in 1795 in a neoclassical style, featuring columns, arches, cornices, and reliefs. Throughout its history, it has been home to prominent figures in Copenhagen’s cultural and commercial life, including the writer Adam Oehlenschläger and the shipowner H.P. Prior, co-founder of the DFDS company. The acquisition by Bruun Rasmussen in 1947 cemented the address as a landmark in Danish art history.

Over the past twelve months, the spaces have been subject to a major restoration that has highlighted valuable architectural features such as herringbone parquet flooring, 4.5 meter high ceilings and arched windows overlooking Sankt Annæ Plads, flooding the interiors with natural light. A striking central staircase leads to a mezzanine where the exhibition continues, with access to a large panoramic terrace dedicated to the outdoor collection.

Knud Erik Hansen, CEO and third-generation owner of Carl Hansen & Søn, states:
«We opened our first – and then only – store in Bredgade in 2013. Since then, we have opened as many as twenty-three Carl Hansen & Søn stores around the world. But Bredgade will always have a special place in our hearts and that’s why we are really pleased to move a little further along the same road, to a location that extraordinarily enhances our collection».

The new flagship store provides an expansive and immersive environment for customers to fully appreciate the breadth and depth of Carl Hansen & Søn’s product offerings. The layout is designed to encourage exploration and discovery, allowing visitors to experience the furniture in a variety of settings and contexts. From iconic designs like the Wishbone Chair to contemporary pieces from emerging designers, the store showcases the evolution of Danish design and the enduring appeal of handcrafted furniture.
