The Rome-based studio Westway Architects, founded in 2005 by Luca Aureggi, Maurizio Condoluci, and Laura Franceschini, has recently completed the redevelopment of this historic Venetian winery, reimagining the spaces to transform it into a public venue with a restaurant and conference room. This masterful transformation involved 800 square meters of hospitality spaces, redesigned to immerse visitors in a timeless journey that emphasizes the cultural identity of Amarone wine.
Guiding the project, architects Luca Aureggi, Maurizio Condoluci, and Laura Franceschini skillfully redesigned the spaces, creating a harmonious dialogue between architectural elegance and sustainability. The renovation endowed Bertani with three hospitality rooms – Sala Fondatori, Sala Archi, and Sala Torchi – each with its own identity but all interconnected by a handcrafted acid-washed concrete floor. This element not only visually unifies the spaces but also serves as a tribute to the company’s mission of placing human labor at the core of its identity.
The Sala Fondatori was reimagined to offer functional flexibility, thanks to a movable wall that divides the space into two separate environments: a tasting room and a meeting room, allowing for various uses. The focal point of the room is a corridor adorned with a majestic wall of historic cement tanks, serving both as an architectural detail and an experiential element.
The Sala Archi showcases the historic arches of an old building, now a museum area that tells the winery’s story through an immersive visual journey. The descent into the historic cellar is enriched by a sequence of original wicker baskets, installed as mural artworks.
In the Sala Torchi, a refined mix of modern design and history invites visitors to moments of relaxed contemplation on couches beside two historic presses. The sophisticated lighting enhances the wall textures and guides the visitor through an engaging and harmonious experience, completed by integrated visual signage that narrates Bertani’s productive history.
With this project, Bertani positions itself as an icon of vinicultural elegance, balancing past values with future prospects, and affirming the historical significance of Amarone as an integral part of Italian wine culture. Westway Architects have thus transformed the space, breathing new life into the materials and architecture, allowing Bertani to offer an experience that respects and celebrates its heritage.
