Jean-Marie Massaud

Known for his ability to blend elegance and functionality in his projects, Jean-Marie Massaud has recently created the Milos outdoor seating collection for Vondom. Characterized by soft curves and nature-inspired shapes, the new series reflects the distinctive style of the French designer, capable of harmoniously combining innovative design and traditional craftsmanship. His influence extends across a wide range of products, and his work for the Spanish brand reflects a vision that balances aesthetics and practicality, making him a key figure in the contemporary design landscape.

How do you perceive the design market in Spain?
I see the design market in Spain as a field rich with opportunities. Spanish companies have a unique energy; they are full of vitality and creativity, qualities that may have faded somewhat elsewhere. This energy translates into strong product investments and manifests with spontaneity, which I find truly inspiring. The growth of this year’s Habitat fair is a positive sign and indicates a growing maturity in the market. The dynamism of Spanish companies is surprising. There’s a very charming vibrancy, and I see a strong investment in product development, which is very promising for designers. In Spain, there’s still a certain boldness and a strong willingness to take a stand.

Can you tell us about your approach to integrating French design into the collection for Vondom?
My goal was to translate Vondom’s formal language into something that retained the authenticity of their aesthetics but with a touch of French refinement. I closely collaborated with the Spanish team, which showed an extraordinary openness and willingness to innovate. We designed pieces that balance robustness with visual softness, using materials that respond well to natural elements, like open-cell polyurethane that allows water to drain freely.

Did you have creative freedom in this collaboration?
Absolutely. The brief was clear: do what you feel is right. This freedom allowed me to explore new ideas without restrictions while maintaining a balance between innovation and tradition. We aimed to develop a range that pays homage to architecture while also considering the needs of everyday functionality.

What are the main themes of this collection?
The collection focuses on a fusion of durability and comfort. I wanted to ensure that the pieces were not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical. We gravitated towards a design distinguished by its architectural structure, maintaining a balance between form and functionality, so as to satisfy not only the eye but also daily use.

How do you work with the Vondom team on technical aspects?
We collaborate closely, combining my design expertise with their technical skills. Vondom has a strong tradition in the plastics industry and they are skilled engineers who know how to turn ideas into tangible realities. This was essential to moving the collection forward and ensuring that each piece met the standards of quality and innovation we set.

Do you think the transition from polypropylene to outdoor padding was significant for Vondom?
Certainly. It was an important transition and represents a step forward in diversifying the company’s production capabilities. By integrating new materials, we were able to develop products that meet the needs of the modern market while maintaining a strong brand identity. This approach allows for the creation of pieces that are not only elegant but also highly functional.
