Urban Commissions is Dubai Design Week’s annual competition for architects and designers to create outdoor furniture for public spaces that follow a responsible and resilient design approach. The stated aim is to encourage a use of urban space – be it a village or a metropolis – that can change the relationship we have with it.
The competition encourages collaboration between the various stakeholders in urban planning. It prioritises public participation through community consultations and feedback initiatives. The focus on sustainable design and inclusive public spaces contributes to improving the city’s liveability, while innovative projects reflect Dubai’s cultural identity and effectively address urban challenges.
The theme for 2024 is ‘Tawila’ (‘table’ in Arabic), an object that is seen as a symbol of interaction between people: a platform for dialogue, creativity and shared experiences. From homes to public spaces, tables have always brought people together, fostering the exchange of ideas and traditions within different cultures.
This year’s winner is Altqadum, an Oman-based design practice led by Marwan Albalushi, Najd Albalushi and Abdulrahim Alkendi. Altqadum is active in research as well as architecture, interior design and objects: their Bab Al Salam Mosque in Muscat was named one of the ‘Most Beautiful Places in the World 2024’ by Time magazine.
Inspired by the musical culture of the Gulf, where communities traditionally gather around and accompany musicians, TukTuKDum is a table that encourages interaction, inviting the audience to become performers and even an integral part of the table itself.
The winning entry was selected by a jury panel of design experts including Dr. Alamira Reem Al Hashimi, urbanist, architect and GM of M_39; Ahmad Bukhash, Director – Urban Planning at Dubai Development Authority and Chief Architect & Founder of Archidentity; design consultant and advisor Cyril Zammit; and Robert Shakespeare, Group Design Director at Cracknell, specialising in sustainable urban and landscape design.
