It would be too limiting to think of them as mere rugs. They are works of art, woven by hand, bringing with them an age-old tradition of exceptional workmanship, coveted for its meticulous rigor and precision. Since the 1830s Sahrai has produced creations that blend the know-how of Persian culture with the contemporary vision of western interior design. The outcome is a product perfectly balanced between present and past, modernity and history, different geographical settings that contaminate each other in a million knots per square meter.

Inside compositions that vary in terms of original colors, patterns and inspirations, capable of establishing dialogue with a wide range of décor contexts (both residential and contract), the constant is the quality of the raw material, its natural softness. Wool from New Zealand, silk and bamboo intertwine in surfaces made to be caressed.

The many new developments presented by Sahrai for the first time during Milano Design Week offer a perfect compendium of this deeply rooted philosophy: inside five locations (at the Salone del Mobile and in showrooms in the city) the company created a true gallery, where carpets and their creators approached specific artistic genres, interpreting the experimental spirit of a brand that is not afraid to explore new, always different languages.

Graphics in green

Carlo Colombo has created his first line of carpets, inspired by one of his most cherished worlds, that of art, starting with Italian painting of the 1930s. In the Green Dry collection, simplicity, elegant lines, abstract signs and an original use of color define essential volumes and geometric effects, for a series of five carpets (Blueberry Bamboo, Dakota Hills, Ebony Sound, Romanic Wall, Sea Beans) in natural silk with reliefs in the same material. Part of the Designers Collection, Green Dry “is like a series of paintings, displayed horizontally only by convention. And it is a collection of carpets that can be admired on a wall, inside a gallery,” the designer explains.

Parte della Designers Collection, Green Dry «è una collezione di tele, che solo per convenzione può essere ammirata orizzontalmente. Ed è una collezione di tappeti, che si potrebbe ammirare su una parete, all’interno di una galleria», spiega il designer.

Hypnotic charm

Kaleido of Life is the name of the collection of limited editions created by Marcel Wanders Studio for Sahrai. The name is a direct reference to the source of inspiration for the designs, namely the kaleidoscope with its attractive symmetrical geometries, along with the sensuality of natural elements.

“At times, when I think about the foundations of design, the definition of the style of a room, I decide to get beyond the widespread use of white walls and minimalist emptiness (…), I enjoy dreaming of design, of creative thinking, that is truly constructed on love, invention, fantasy,” Marcel Wanders says. This attitude is vivid in the three new carpets (Allure, Charm, Lush) interpreted in only six versions each, in which the three natural elements of air, water and earth are depicted through creative computer graphics.

Perceiving the abstract

The Noor Collection has been expanded with four new creations that conserve the collection’s identity: a synthesis of Italian style and luxurious materials, in design inspired by light and the extraordinary forms it can generate. Gravity, Force, Mass and Pressure, in New Zealand wool with reliefs in natural silk, suggest four different styles driven by natural forms: undulating phytomorphic designs, ellipses and spirals that transmit a sense of fluidity, energy and dynamism.
