To observe the furnishings and complements designed by Charles Zana, even simply online, is to immerse oneself in refined, timeless beauty. An architect and interior designer with 30 years of experience, Zana offers a collection prompted by an exclusive modern spirit, in the finest French tradition. To display his works at their best, he has opened a space in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district of Paris, a gallery right behind his studio (a small ‘secret’ door connects the two spaces).
“Since childhood,” he says, “I have been interested in art, also thanks to the influence of my father, a collector. In the 1970s I learned from the books published by Skira, for the most part: there were few design galleries. Then, since I was good at geometry and math, I began studying architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts, a discipline that held my two passions together. But I became interested in architecture by starting with art.”
Like an atelier, to some extent, but also like a furnished room, the gallery can be used for encounters or to interact with clients and designers. It has an open layout with two streetfront windows, for an essential, typically Parisian setting. Inside, works of art and design form a sequence, culminating in a space with a large table where clients in search of the ‘perfect project’ can work together with the 20 experts of Zana’s team: artisans, lighting designers, landscape designers.
The studio of Charles Zana works on international consulting for both residential and commercial contexts (boutiques, hotels and restaurants), while also concentrating on set design and product design. The architect works in close contact with his staff, also for the line of furnishings, creating unique items with materials of the highest quality and luxurious fabrics, where the leitmotif of the architecture is always and in any case emotion.
