Expanding domestic boundaries

No walls in the background, but gardens, nature, swimming pools and infinite vistas. These are the new spaces chosen as the settings for outdoor furniture collections

Outdoor furniture families that gradually grow, expanding with new pieces: projects where an intuition is interpreted in multiple forms, becoming a sofa, an armchair, a coffee table, a pouf, a trolley. Comfort in the open air, with a total look.

Designed by Francesc Rifé for Oiside, the Beam collection (on cover) takes its cue from a game of boards and tops of different lengths. The new aluminium version offers a wide range of personalization options thanks to its availability in any color. The voluminous padded portions are covered in batch-dyed acrylic fabric, a process that makes the colors last longer. The covers, laminated with thermowelded stitching, are fully waterproof.

Richard Schultz collaborated with Harry Bertoia to develop a seating collection in iron wire for Knoll. Some years later, Florence Knoll asked him to create a line of furniture for use in the open air. The result was the Leisure collection, now known as Collection 1966. A family composed of a square or rectangular table, with a top in porcelain enamel steel, a chair, a chaise longue, an armchair and a small square table with a structure in white or onyx color.

DNA by Gandía Blasco, designed by José A. Gandía-Blasco Canales, takes its inspiration from the geometry of the shutters on Mediterranean houses, and the play of light and shadow they generate. Today the collection continues to grow, incorporating five new items in wood-effect aluminium. From dining tables with optional glass tops to serving trolleys, by way of the XL 2 sofa, all the way to the new Chill double garden bed versions and the Al Fresco sofa.

The Woodstock line of ETRO Home Interiors widens with a sofa and an ottoman for outdoor use. The first, with a base in solid iroko wood, suggests the settings of the Arabian tradition; the ottoman adds a bohemian touch to the decor of terraces and gardens. For the Dalì table, the bronze finish of the lined base creates a contrast with the luminosity of the ceramic top.

Adam D. Tihany, together with Unopiù, has created a line of outdoor furnishings that moves forward with an age-old tradition: that of wrought iron. Ariete redesigns the typical spiral motif of these furnishings, extending and closing it to form circles. In the armchair and the sofa this ornamental characteristic becomes structural. The Ariete series includes a sofa, an armchair, a chair, large and small tables and a bench.

From the new collaboration between Ethimo and the studio Zanellato/Bortotto comes Rotin, a lounge collection with structure in pickled teak, composed of a sofa, a lounge chair, a coffee table and an ottoman. Here the inspiration is the Asian tradition of bamboo, reinvented with pickled teak tubes joined by nautical rope. The handmade tabletops are in marble, glazed volcanic stone or marble/concrete mosaic.
