It might just be the most beautiful catamaran of the moment. Its name is Great White and it belongs to one of the greatest international tennis players, winner of the recent Australian Open 2022. We’re talking about Rafael Nadal and his totally custom Sunreef 80 Power. We had an onboard tour during the latest Monaco Yacht Show in September 2021, where we were very impressed by the boat’s 320 sqm of living space. Since childhood the Majorcan champ has been used to living in contact with the sea, and whenever there is a break in his busy tournament schedule he likes to relax by navigating in the Balearic Islands.

Great White is not his first boat. Nadal was already the owner of a 23-meter Monte Carlo Yachts MYC76. Recently he decided to shift to the larger spaces of a catamaran, and he chose the great quality offered by Sunreef. The Polish shipyard is famous for the creation of luxurious custom catamarans, always with an accent on sustainability. Lately the company has launched the first Sunreef 80 Eco, an electric catamaran that navigates in total silence, respecting nature.

“I’m a real yachting enthusiast, and whenever I get a chance I’m ready to set sail,” the champion says. “The comfort and space provided by a catamaran are peerless. I chose the Sunreef 80 Power for its performance, but also because the space has been expanded. Space is important when you want to welcome friends and family, and it lets you have various options for more privacy. Two years ago I visited a Sunreef 80 sailing model at the Cannes Yachting Festival, and I fell in love with it. But I wanted a motor version.”

So here comes Great White, an ultra-modern boat with elegant lines, combining comfort, seakeeping prowess and elegant design. The white and cobalt blue coloring of the exterior catches the eye while emphasizing the lines, with the high bow that slopes toward the stern; double steps offer easy access to the sea, while at the center a hydraulic platform raises the tender and also forms a beach deck at the stern.

Large vertical openings add character to the lines of the two hulls: they are portholes that bring light inside, also in the zone with the cabins. Light and fluid spaces generate the design leitmotif. The large living area is like a terrace on the sea, thanks to big windows and low gunwales that permit a 180-degree view of the sea.

“This was one of the first modifications I requested from the shipyard: I wanted to see the sea even when seated, so I asked if it was possible to lower the hull at the sides; Sunreef did not object,” Nadal explains. Two oversize sofas are placed at the two sides of the living room, while two 77” monitors are at the center, back to back, one for the zone for socializing, one for the dining area. The large planks of the wood floors provide a sense of continuity with the external teak decks.

The command post starboard from the living area becomes part of social life; on the other side, a settee facing forward permits Nadal to converse with his skipper and to share moments of navigation.

Outside, the wide cockpit is a shady spot for relaxing moments, while at the bow there is an immense sundeck and another cockpit with large sofas; the flybridge provides another social terrace, with a second, external wheelhouse.

Below, Great White can accommodate 8 guests in 4 cabins. Nadal’s cabin is at the center, in the right hull: the very large suite with walk-in closet features a balcony just over the water, a true rarity for a catamaran.
