The many ‘resources’ of Carl Hansen & Son

Keeping faith with the original is one of the basic principles of the group, with the essential aim – however – of enriching the Danish modern tradition, if possible. Over the last decade, the sustainable use of raw materials in production and of resources in corporate management has become equally indispensable

Knud Eric Hansen, CEO of the group, advises designers who suggest new products to start with a masterpiece for inspiration, then attempting to add something, to make it evolve. We had a chance to talk with him about new creations on the way, such as a modular sofa designed by Eoos, the FK11 chair by Fabricius & Kastholm, a ‘reading’ chair paired with the FK63 bookcase, or the collaboration with London-based Ilse Crawford, who has developed a new color range for a limited edition of five chairs from the First Masterpieces Collection created by Hans J. Wegner in 1950, still in production.

Among the new entries, we can also see a bed, the first one produced by Carl Hansen & Son, already available in June 2021.
The BM0555 takes its cue from the daybed by Børge Mogensen, and is the result of collaboration with the Swedish mattress maker Dux, which has made the CH18 spring mattress model for the occasion. The structure is in FSC® (FSC-C135991) certified oak, with a back cushion and headrest in fabric. We have decided to launch a bed model because we want to keep moving in the direction of a total offering for our clients, of a Carl Hansen & Son ‘lifestyle’ rather than just furniture series or models. For the same reason, we have recently introduced a line of table or suspension lamps, to complete the collection for the home or for public spaces like hotels or restaurants, given the fact that demand from the hospitality industry is rapidly growing. A ‘lifestyle’ that is on view in our many flagship stores all over the world, the latest of which has been opened in Helsinki, and is entirely set up with furnishings and accessories by Carl Hansen & Son.

How do you choose which models to put into production?
I make the final decisions on new products, and it is not so simple, because we have the possibility of choosing from models already existing in our corporate archives. Over the years we have acquired the rights for projects by many designers, such as Hans J. Wegner or Børge Mogensen, and we have very close ties to their studios. Nevertheless, we also work with younger studios, to create new pieces that comply with our DNA.

A DNA that has always been based on sustainable use of resources.
Yes, we have reached the point of utilizing every possible square centimeter of wood in the making of our products, to avoid wasting precious resources like timber and forests. Production scrap goes to a large municipal power plant recently built, to provide heating for our factories and for hundreds of houses in the area near our headquarters. Everything is reutilized – we waste nothing.
