The sixth unit of the hotel chain founded and run by Kike Sarasola, Room Mate Macarena has opened at Calle Gran Via 43, in an emblematic building designed by Luis Gutiérrez Soto in the 1940s. “For me, it is a hotel with a special meaning,” says Sarasola, who as a child visited the barber shop on the ground level with his father, and then decided to pay homage to his friend Macarena Rey – whose grandfather was the owner of the building’s historic movie house – in the choice of the name. The furnishings of the spaces and the 130 rooms is by interior architect Tomás Alía, who has managed to create a cosmopolitan atmosphere through avant-garde ingredients inserted in a scale intense, vivid colors.
Room Mate Macarena is based on a unique concept, starting from the reception located on the 9th floor and decorated by large leaves inspired by the works of master craftsmen, traditionally created for the celebrations of the Falles in Valencia. A large breakfast room completes the space, formulated though contrast in an unusual mixture of Spanish and Indian crafts, including mirrors that wrap the vertical walls, and tile floors with decorative motifs created by the architect himself.
The Arabian inspirations and games of color are seen in the design of the guestrooms, where delicate reticular wooden panels inspired by the works of the great masters of inlay are matched with Renaissance coverings and refined headboards made by the best embroiderers, with a design that extends to the floor, meeting the geometric patterns of the carpeting.
Finally there are the views, with the Madrid skyline seen from the rooms and the rooftop, with its swimming pool, solarium and cocktail bar, which make it the true strong point of the hotel.
