Inaugurated on 16 May 2019, Al Janoub Stadium is the first new stadium commissioned for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The operable roof was designed by Schlaich Bergermann Partner in sympathy with the cladding using pleated PTFE fabric and cables; its design reflects the maritime traditions and history of the location, in particular, the traditional boat of the region, the dhow.
