How do you arrive at an object? For the designers Kate and Joel Booy, known together as Truly Truly, the creative process is not a matter of straight lines. This is the starting point for their exhibition Non-Linear, from 16 September to 19 October at Aram Gallery in London: “Our way of working does not follow a linear course, with a beginning and an end,” the duo in life and work based in Rotterdam, but of Australian origin, explain. “We often change direction along the way, shifting back, heading towards another side, to embrace an idea in a different way until we reach the desired destination.
”The designers have been invited to narrate their creative practice, the way design ideas arrive, the connections that are created, the techniques that are juxtaposed to find new, unexplored solutions. Investigation and research are their daily fare: the two approach design in a multidisciplinary way, developing new objects for the future, which are more flexible and suited to our increasingly dynamic way of living and our hybrid spaces.
The show presents eight works that describe their modus operandi, from an island kitchen clad with iridescent surfaces to a sculptural glass divider, and vases in transparent resin. It is enhanced by the shots of the photographer Pim Top, in tune with the inspirations of Truly Truly.
