The learning machine

The culture of design will be at the centre of BASE Milano to (un)learn and imagine new forms of learning, also in partnership with Ventura Projects. New for 2019, the entrance ticket

The need to learn, but also to un-learn, is the fil rouge of the initiatives established for this Milano Design Week by BASE Milano – a cultural project promoted by ARCI Milano, Avanzi, esterni, h+ and Make a Cube3 under the patronage of the Municipality of Milan – which continues to propose itself to the city as a Learning Machine, “an organism for learning and a permanent training workshop at the service of the city, of the professionals in the creative industries and of the neighbourhood, capable creating a dialogue between different creative communities to absorb, share and transform each other’s content and for contamination into different areas.”

From 9 to 14 April the dialogue and interaction will have as protagonists designers, thinkers, artists and innovators who will give life to ‘UNLearn / RE-learn’, a ‘dis-educational’ path of exchange, installations, talks and experiences, involving, among others, Italo Rota with Marco Cadioli, Salottobuono, Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto, Stefano Mirti and Super – Scuola Superiore d’Arte Applicata of Castello Sforzesco. The aim will be to investigate and imagine new processes, places and forms of learning that will question the patterns of the present and redesign a future in which the cultural and creative sector is the motor of innovation.

In addition to discussing design, it will also be possible to ‘practice’ design together with designers and artisans in the workshops organised throughout the week in the officinaBASE according to an approach of Learning by doing. Among these, “The culture of doing with local companies and communities” organised with Unirsm Design | University of the Republic of San Marino, the Institut Industrial Design of Basel, Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst | Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz and with the support of the Embassy of Switzerland in Italy and the Embassy of San Marino. The workshop, coordinated by Alfred von Escher and Raffaella Guidobono, offers in its 200 square metres 8 total stations, of which 2 dedicated to the processing of iron, 4 to woodworking and 2 open positions to be adapted to the needs of the project.

New this year is the partnership with Ventura Projects, in tune with key concepts for the culture of design such as experimentation, innovation, the future. The exhibition space of 3,500 square metres on the two floors of BASE Milano will be the headquarters of Ventura Future and its ‘Design Stories’, focusing on the themes of technology, food design, biodesign of academic research presented by 80 exhibitors, among whom Isabelle Sanchez Jacques, SOM tales of perfume, Studio Schneemann, Mash. T Design Studio, Poliarte ALS Design Academy India, Institute of Industrial Design Switzerland, Central Saint Martins UK, UMPRUM Czech Republic, University of Iowa 3D Design Program, Design School Kolding Denmark, and the Future (H)ear(T) initiative: 7 Dutch design visions for a liveable earth.

The exhibition project will also involve the casaBASE, the design hostel/artist’s residence open all year, which will become the guesthouse of some of the participating designers and the place where they can work, exhibit and discuss their projects with the public.
Always in collaboration with Ventura Projects, the portineria di BASE concierge will become a sort of ‘confessional’ dedicated to design, where one can exchange thoughts with some exceptional ‘priests’ chosen from among the most influential personalities of the sector on topics such as urban solution, manufacturing 4.0 and the relationship between the designer and industry. The confessionals of Design Confession will be realised by officinaBASE in collaboration with the Officina Grafica of Super – Scuola Superiore d’Arte Applicata of Castello Sforzesco.
